Many children go to school every day, learn their curriculum and write exams. While this is the basis for most school education methods, it is not necessarily a foolproof way to educate a child. The Australian government’s Education Council devised a test to assess a child’s learning capabilities, and it is NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy).

Results
They calculate the results of the NAPLAN exam as bands. All students of every year write the same exam with the same questions. The Council then collates their performance into ten bands.
The National Minimum Standard (NMS) is Two for 3rd-year students, Four for 5th-year students, Five for 7th-year students and Six for 9th-year students. The students write the test according to the band assigned to their year. Bands 1 to 6 is for 3rd-year students, 3 to 8 for 5th-year students, 4 to 9 for 7th-year students and 5 to 10 for 9th-year students. Since they monitor all the students on the same scale, the test allows for a continuous, comprehensive and consistent evaluation of their performance.

The results are usually delivered by September and don’t indicate pass or fail. These tests show a comparative analysis of the student’s performance against the national average. This analysis helps teachers and parents understand the child’s learning abilities and strengthen them in subjects in which they perform poorly. The test also gives an insight into the curriculum of Australian Schools. The national average makes changes in the curriculum that can come into place nation-wide, allowing for a more suited education system for Australian students.
